Food Calorie Calculator

Search through our database for the foods you’ve eaten throughout the day.

Directions for Search

  1. Type in the food you are looking for and click on the Search for Food Item button. Search Tips: Enter only one food item at a time and keep your search broad (e.g. type “bagel” instead of “bagel with cream cheese,” and search “cream cheese” separately). Enter condiments and additions (such as cheese, pickles, etc.) separately. Try to avoid searching for brand names (instead, search for a generic version such as “bran cereal” instead of “Kellogg”). And for fruits search broadly as well – e.g., “apples” instead of “apple”. In some cases, narrow your results by entering more keywords or more specific keywords if you want to find a specific food faster. For example, a search for “cheese” finds over 200 results, but “blue cheese”finds less than 10 results.
  2. Check your spelling carefully when searching for a food item. The calculator does not have a spell-checker.
  3. If you want to view the next page of your search results, scroll down to the bottom of the Search Results box and click on the next page number (where it says “Change page”). If you want to expand the number of search results that appear per page, change the number in the “Page size” box (also at the bottom of the Search Results box) and then click on “Change”.
  4. When one of the available food items appears you will be asked to select the number of servings. Be sure to enter a whole number or decimal in the Quantity box, not an "X", check mark or fraction. Next, select the exact Serving Size of the food you are selecting. If your portions were larger than the given serving size on a particular food item, increase the number of servings For example, if you drank one-half cup of milk and the serving size is listed as one cup, choose .5 servings; for 50g you would choose the 100g serving and make your quantity .5. (More information on converting the 100g servings is listed below.)
  5. Then, if you have modified the serving size on any food in your list, click on “Refresh Results” (which will recalculate the fat grams and calories of the foods you modified). Next, be sure to check the box next to each food item you want to save in your list and then click the "Add Items to My List" button (this will only add the items you have checked).
  6. This will take you to a summary display page and you can choose the Meal where you would like to place the food item in your personal online Food Diary. Select breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snack. Next, check the box next to each food item you want to add to your Food Diary and then click on the "Add Checked Items to Food Diary" button. The checked item(s) will be automatically added to your Food Diary (under "Today's Diary"). This will take you to the Food Diary and you can then click the Food Calorie Calculator “Quick Link” at the top of the Food Diary to search for more foods.
  7. To create a list of foods to add to the Food Diary all at once, after adding an item to your Food List page (part of the Food Calorie Calculator), simply click on the “Search for More” button. You can keep adding foods to get a running total, adjust which meal the food item refers to, and when you're done click on "Add Checked Items to Food Diary" to add the entire list to your Food Diary.
  8. Please note, to add foods to the Food Diary for a previous day, you’ll need to go to your Food Diary first, find the date you are looking for and open the Food Diary to that page. Then use the Food Calorie Calculator “Quick Link” at the top of the Food Diary to return to the Food Calorie Calculator.

Instructions for using portions of 100g servings
For many of the foods in the Food Calorie Calculator, the serving size is given as 100 grams. However you may eat more or less of a food. To describe the portion size you actually ate, you need to enter the portion (using a whole number or decimal) in the “quantity” box. So, for example, if you eat 50 grams of food you will need to enter 0.5 and if you have 150 grams of a food you will need to enter 1.5. The table below may be helpful in knowing what quantities to enter for a given portion of food:
