What do all of these people have in common? It may strike you as unlikely, because many of us do not think of ourselves as having much in common with superstar athletes. However, there may be more similarities than you think.

Consider this… None of these people were born in great shape. All of these people have had to work hard to achieve their goals. And at some point, every single one of these people had to reach inside themselves to find the determination to do so. Every single one of these people had to make a conscious decision to get out of bed or get off the couch and make the extra effort needed to get in shape and live a healthy life. While your workouts may be different than theirs, we all must – at some point – put on our exercise gear and find the inspiration to work towards a goal.

So where do you fit in? Do not assume that because you are not a natural all-star in the world of competitive sports that you should give up on exercise altogether. Even if you don’t have any Olympic medals to your name, you are still deserving of health and happiness, and you deserve to give yourself the opportunity to live the healthier life that comes with regular exercise.

Do you have days where you cannot find the inspiration to exercise? Do you feel unmotivated? You know you need to exercise and want to become healthier, but lack the honest desire to follow through? This feeling is normal and very real. Motivation may not come easy. Motivation is something that we must find. It is something that we must honestly feel, and something that we must constantly foster in order to keep it by our side. It can also be hard to find -- a lack of motivation has proven a roadblock to many dieting efforts. So what should you do when your well of inspiration seems dry?

You should never stop dreaming, and never give up on your goals. If you are lacking motivation (something that happens to us all from time to time), here are a few ways you can do some soul searching for the inspiration to get exercising and get moving towards your goals:
Read a Book
There are a number of books suited to motivate different tastes. Do you like stories of overcoming adversity that will inspire you to get moving? Try an athlete’s autobiography, such as Lance Armstrong’s It’s Not About the Bike. Perhaps a general soul-searching book is more your thing – try The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. And if you are simply looking for ways to track down your inner motivation, look for Norman Vincent Peale’s the Power of Positive Thinking
Watch a Movie
Watch one before a workout to get pumped, or if there’s a TV available near the exercise equipment you use, pop in a video to get you through a workout. It may even make the time go by quicker! Try Rudy, a Rocky film, Without Limits, Hoosiers or Miracle.

Keep a Journal
Record how you feel after exercising, especially when you’ve had a particularly good workout. At the end of each day write down other thoughts, goals you have and goals you’ve accomplished. Keep it positive, and focus on what you have done well. Use the journal as a way to inspire you on days you don’t feel like exercising or are in need of extra sunshine.
Find a Buddy
Some people find they receive the most motivation from others. Consider hiring a personal trainer or coach to guide you through your workouts and share their expertise. Find a friend who is willing to exercise with you. Join a team or an exercise class. Put yourself in a situation where you are not alone and have others to cheer you on, while you in return can help cheer them on as well.

We will all encounter days when we are lacking in the motivation department. But if you make just a little effort, you too can find the inspiration to overcome a roadblock. And no matter what, continue pushing toward that goal, because it can be yours
